The Ultimate Pre-Flight Checklist: Is Your Phone Ready for an eSIM?

In 2026, the question isn’t if you should use an eSIM for your travels, but whether your phone is ready for one. Setting up your connection with 3GMRC takes minutes, but if your device isn’t prepared, you could find yourself stuck without data at the baggage claim.

Before you head to the airport, run through this 4-step “pre-flight” audit to ensure a seamless landing.

1. The Compatibility Test

Not every smartphone has the built-in hardware to support a digital SIM. Most flagship phones from 2020 onwards (iPhone 11+, Samsung S20+, Pixel 3+) are compatible, but it’s best to verify your specific unit.

  • The “Secret Code” Shortcut: Open your phone’s dialer and type *#06#.
    • If you see an EID (Embedded Identity Document) number, your phone is 100% eSIM-ready.
  • The Settings Check: * iPhone: Settings > Cellular. If you see “Add eSIM,” you’re good to go.
    • Android: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs. Look for a “+” or “Add eSIM” option.

2. The “Carrier Lock” Check (The #1 Dealbreaker)

Even if your phone has the hardware, it won’t accept a 3GMRC eSIM if it is still “locked” to your home provider (like a phone currently on a payment plan).

  • How to check (iPhone): Go to Settings > General > About and scroll down to Carrier Lock.
    • It must say “No SIM restrictions.”
  • How to check (Android): Contact your provider or try inserting a physical SIM from a different network. If it doesn’t get a signal, your phone is likely locked.
  • The Fix: Call your home carrier and request an “International Unlock.” If your phone is paid off, they are usually required to do this within 48 hours.

3. The “Home-Ground” Installation

Never wait until you land to install your eSIM. You need a stable internet connection to download the digital profile from 3GMRC’s servers.

  • Install on Wi-Fi: Do this 24 hours before your flight while you are still on your home or office Wi-Fi.
  • The QR Code Strategy: You will receive a QR code via email. Since you can’t scan a code that is displayed on your own screen, either:
    1. Print the QR code.
    2. Display it on a laptop or a friend’s phone to scan it.
    3. Use the “Manual Entry” codes provided in your 3GMRC confirmation email.

4. The Labeling Habit

Once the eSIM is installed, your phone will ask how to label the new line. Don’t leave it as “Secondary.”

  • Label your home line as “Personal” or “Home.”
  • Label your 3GMRC line as “Travel” or “3GMRC Data.”
  • Important: Keep the Travel line OFF until you are on the plane or have landed to avoid starting your data timer prematurely.
